Heading to University? Check Your Insurance Before You Leave Home

22 Sep

September is one of the busiest times of year for students, with thousands preparing to start university for the first time or return for another academic year.

Amid the excitement of moving into accommodation, meeting new people and getting organised for the months ahead, insurance probably isn’t at the top of the list.

However, new research from Aviva suggests it’s something students and parents should think about before term begins. The insurer found that the average value of a student insurance claim has more than doubled in just three years, rising from £781 in 2022 to £1,766 in 2025.

Theft Remains The Biggest Risk

According to Aviva’s data, 56% of all student claims are the result of theft, ranging from break-ins at student accommodation to belongings being stolen while travelling, socialising or commuting.

The most commonly claimed-for items are:

  • Laptops and computers (40%)
  • Mobile phones (22%)
  • Bicycles (19%)
  • Bags, luggage and wallets (19%)

With many students relying on laptops and phones for everything from coursework and lectures to staying connected with family and friends, replacing stolen items can be both disruptive and costly.

You May Already Have Some Cover

One of the biggest misconceptions is that students automatically need to arrange a brand-new insurance policy when they move away from home.

In reality, some protection may already exist through:

  • A parent or guardian’s home insurance policy
  • Insurance provided as part of university accommodation
  • Benefits included with a student bank account

That said, it’s important to check exactly what’s covered. Limits, exclusions and conditions can vary, particularly for items taken away from the home or carried around campus on a daily basis.

A Few Checks Before Term Starts

Before heading off to university, it’s worth taking a few minutes to:

  • Check whether personal belongings are covered away from home
  • Confirm any limits for laptops, phones and other high-value items
  • Understand what excess applies in the event of a claim
  • Keep a record of valuable belongings and serial numbers
  • Consider whether additional personal belongings cover is needed

Peace of Mind For The Year Ahead

University life should be about new experiences, new friendships and focusing on your studies, not worrying about replacing expensive belongings.

With student claims becoming more costly and theft accounting for more than half of all claims, taking a little time to review your insurance cover before term starts could help avoid unnecessary stress and expense later in the year.

If you’re unsure whether a student is adequately protected, speaking to your insurance adviser before moving day can help ensure there are no surprises when university life begins.
