HSE’s Asbestos Campaigns Highlight the Continuing Risk

30 Sep

Asbestos didn’t disappear when it was banned in the UK. It remains in millions of homes and buildings today and can become dangerous when disturbed or damaged. Sadly, approximately 5,000 people die every year from past exposure to asbestos.

The HSE is currently running two asbestos campaigns:

1. Asbestos and You

This campaign highlights the risk of asbestos to tradespeople.

Every tradesperson is likely to undertake work in a building that contains asbestos at some point. Those carrying out repairs or refurbishment work are at a higher risk of disturbing asbestos, especially when working in houses built before the year 2000.

For further information, please visit the HSE’s Asbestos and You website, which contains a quick guide for trades and asbestos essentials task sheets.

2. Asbestos – Your Duty

This campaign aims to raise awareness of the legal duty to manage asbestos in buildings.

Please click here to learn more about:

  • Your legal duty, and the steps required to comply with the law
  • Who is the duty holder and what they must do
  • Examples of how asbestos can be managed across different industries

There are also templates for an asbestos management plan and an asbestos register, as well as a Duty to Manage Asbestos in Buildings podcast.
